The Shanghai Document (Russian: Шанхайский документ) is an early documentary film. This silent film was directed by Yakov Bliokh (Яков Блиох,1895-1957) and was released in the USSR in 1928. 　　The film portrays Shanghai, China in the early 1920s. It shows the contrasts between the world of Western expatriates (including Britons, Americans, New Zealanders, Australians, and Danes) who live in the luxurious Shanghai International Settlement, and that of the Shanghainese inhabitants, who spend their days laboring. 　　The events which inspired the film revolve around the Chinese nationalist revolution (1925-27), including the May Thirtieth Movement, and the First United Front of the Chinese Communist Party, and the Nationalists (the Kuomintang), and its collapse in February 1927 when Chiang Kai-shek ordered a purge of the Communists in Shanghai and in other cities held by the revolutionaries.

上海解放前夕，随着当局“金圆券”大量投入，通货膨胀不可避免的爆发了。美籍华人郭绍白（王亚楠 饰）想以记者身份向境外报道，遭到老同学蒋经国亲信陈济侃（韦力 饰）的反对，并劝郭赶紧离开上海。郭的未婚妻李惠蓉（袁泉 饰）家里经营着丝厂，她正暗中帮共产党做资本家的策反工作，这一切郭绍白都蒙在鼓里。次年春天上海解放，人民解放军全面接管上海，同时宣布废除“金圆券”，统一使用人民币。陈毅市长为打击残留的反动经济势力，亲自下令查封金融大厦。陈济侃等人暗中纠结反动资本家搞金融投机，遭到李惠蓉的无情揭露，怀恨在心的陈济侃在一次特务纵火中向李惠蓉射出了罪恶的子弹......
